Da Brat, a rapper, is pregnant at the age of 48 and is expecting her first child with her wife. She has described the experience as quite a journey.

Rapper Da Brat, who is 48 years of age, and her wife Jesseca "Judy" Harris-Dupart are anticipating their initial offspring, a pivotal milestone for the couple.

The pair, who initially imparted the news to People, chatted about their pathway to motherhood and how the pregnancy has unfurled.

"It's been an extremely convoluted voyage," Da Brat, whose given name is Shawntae Harris-Dupart, explained. "There's an abundance of information we've come to learn about females beyond the age of 40."

'I never believed I would have children'

The rapper, famed for her chart-topping single "Funkdafied," disclosed that she and Harris-Dupart began their pathway to motherhood the previous year when they wedded in February. At that point, Harris-Dupart, aged 41, who is the CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair Products, was launching a new product line influenced by her wife and her wife's legendary braids and protective hairstyles.

"It originated as a jest, we were like, 'We're enlarging our family!'" Da Brat recounted. "But then we garnered an immense response. It was like, 'Oh my God do we actually want to have children, and if we do, girl, we better hasten up!'"

Da Brat mentioned that she never believed that motherhood was within the realm of possibility for her. Her wife was already a mom to three children from a past relationship.

"I never believed I would have children," Da Brat stated. "I felt like, since I didn't conceive earlier, then it simply wouldn't happen for me."

"I started perceiving life through a diverse lens," she appended, referring to Harris-Dupart's assistance in altering her perspective on motherhood. "I thought to myself, I crave a little me with you. Something unique from both of us that we can cherish, nurture, and care for unreservedly."

A devastating loss

Da Brat divulged that she was initially hesitant to bear the child that they share, but they eventually decided that she would carry the child due to Harris-Dupart's health issues after undergoing an egg retrieval procedure.

"We had a minor clash initially... but I sensed like she should have the experience," Harris-Dupart affirmed. "She is so caring."

Before Da Brat's embryo transfer procedure, she experienced some health issues of her own, including needing to undergo surgery to eradicate fibroids and polyps, which are typically non-cancerous growths in a woman's uterus, as specified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Women who possess fibroids are more prone to encountering issues during pregnancy and delivery, according to the Office on Women's Health.

However, during their pregnancy voyage, Da Brat experienced a miscarriage.

"I had never been so exhilarated about something that I didn't even know I desired," she uttered. "I fell head over heels for the concept and then it was entirely snatched away from me."

Despite the loss, the couple decided to move forward with the remaining eggs they had and an unknown donor from their cryobank. Da Brat is currently 18 weeks pregnant, and she claimed that the situation is nothing short of a "divine blessing."

As the couple preps for their child's arrival, Da Brat stated that pregnancy has been an intriguing experience for her.

"Everything makes me tear up," she articulated. "If someone wins 'American Idol,' I shed a tear. I'm like, I'm stronger than that!"
